I would definitely recommend book 1. Book 2 has no text and is just a book of studies or etudes.

Mel Bays website describes Mandolin Techniques 1 as intermediate-difficult and Mandolin Techniques 2 as intermediate. I have played guitar for decades but am new to the Mandolin. Which book would you recommend?

Hi James –

I started playing mandolin when I was 45. I’d had a few years of guitar lessons as a kid (junior high) and had not picked up a stringed instrument in 30 years. If you’re currently playing guitar, I don’t think you’ll have much trouble picking up the mandolin. It’s tuned differently – in fifths – and seems to me that makes it easier to learn. Good Luck!

It’s a joke in the vein of “Clapton Shreds”, “Jaco Pastorius Shred”, etc.. Check out the “shreds” series of videos on youtube. It’s not real but hopefully it looks like it is.
